	Description

	Creatine is an amino acid that is involved in energy transfer intracellularly and intercellularly in muscle and brain tissue via the blood stream. It accomplishes this energy transfer by being a phosphate transporter, delivering phosphate to the nucleotide ADP, thus forming the high energy nucleotide ATP which powers cell communication systems. Creatine receives the phosphate from ATP by way of the enzyme activity of creatine kinase. Creatine is produced in the body by a methylation process involving glycine, arginine and S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe). Supplementation with the three amino acids, however, does not promote creatine production in the body. If the body is not producing enough creatine, only creatine supplementation or creatine from the diet will restore appropriate body levels. Inadequate body levels of creatine can be present for a number of reasons associated with body biochemistry involving folate, vitamin B-12, methionine or methylation.
