SACCHAROMYCES
BOULARDII Saccharomyces boulardii is a non-pathogenic yeast that is recognized to have probiotic effectiveness used alone and/or in combination with other probiotics to support digestion. It usefulness was discovered by a group of French physicians investigating intestinal issues. DESCRIPTION/CHARACTERISTICS Saccharomyces
boulardii is considered a
non-pathogenic, non-colonizing
baker's yeast species, which
is very closely related to
brewer's yeast also known
as S. cervesiae. The S. boulardii,
although it is recognized
as a yeast, is not related
to the Candida species (Candida
albicans, tropicalas, etc.),
which can cause pathogenic
infections in the gastrointestinal
and genitourinary tracts.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS S. boulardii should only be taken under the guidance and direction of a health care practitioner. This supplement is generally well tolerated; however, if any of the following symptoms occur, then stop and contact your physician: hives, rash, or itchy swollen skin, breathing problems or tightness in throat or chest. These symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction which may require medical attention or require that the product be discontinued. Other possible side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as flatulence (gas) and constipation. Do not take the S. boulardii supplementation at the same time as any prescription antifungals like Nystatin, Diflucan, Sporonox, etc. Antifungals are recognized to kill S. boulardii and thus should be taken at a different time of the day (separated by 2 to 3 hours) as is recommended by the physician. STORAGE Keep the bottle in a cool dry area. The product may be refrigerated and Kirkman actually recommends this for maximum stability. Store away from heat or direct sunlight as heat can adversely affect the potency of the supplement. SCIENTIFIC STUDIES IN SUPPORT OF SACCHAROMYCES BOULARDII There is a growing body of documentation in the scientific and medical literature pertaining to the role of S. boulardii in supporting intestinal health issues.
